Guarantees of Origin are certificates that prove that a certain amount of electricity has been generated from renewable energy sources. They are mainly used in Europe to promote transparency and give consumers the opportunity to support the generation of renewable energy. Each certificate represents the generation of one megawatt hour (MWh) of electricity.
I-RECs serve a similar purpose to guarantees of origin, but are used worldwide, particularly in countries where there is no local certification system. These certificates provide a reliable way of claiming and verifying the consumption of renewable energy. As with GOs, each I-REC represents one MWh of electricity generated from renewable energy and fed into the grid. This ensures that the energy consumed by the certificate holder comes from renewable sources.
